KATYA KABANOVA

PRODUCTION AND COSTUME DESIGNER

MODEL MAKER AND ILLUSTRATOR

Katya Kabanova takes place in a small, isolated Russian town on the banks of the ever-present Volga river. In this repressive society in which rules and appearances are all that matter, Katya feels trapped. This NIDA theoretical production of the Opera explores Russia in its war like state in 2022 while the invasion of Ukraine is in full swing. Oblivious to the far away sounds of explosion and chaos ongoing in the score, Katya and her family live in a tall housing commission in a barren part of Russia, hiding from federal agents while her family is seemly carrying out crime along side the events in this play. This Opera experiments with the medium of live cinema in an Opera framework. The set has hidden camera with in it that projects images of the inside happenings onto the facade of the building. The buying has the ability to open up to show the inside aswell, creating a cave that funnels the sound and projects it forwards. The set and furniture pieces would also aid in doing this with everything being made of wood or stone like textures and positioned in a certain way aiding the sound move and not get trapped within the rooms.
